Just got back from the most amazing evening at the Esplanade Theatre here in Singapore and decided to blog it right away. The lovely Chris and I have decided to take advantage of more of Singapore's cultural offerings in 2012 and so this evening found us at the Esplanade theatre (the hedgehog like building pictured above), watching Ballet Revolucion, a Cuban dance company that combines classical ballet with high energy contemporary and hip hop. I say high energy, but that does not do justice to the skill, charisma and sheer joie de vivre of the cast of dancers. They are backed by a wonderful live band, whose versions of hits by Prince, Shakira, the Police and Beyonce (the truly wonderful "Single Ladies") to name but a few, provide the soundrtrack to the performance.
It is not often you see a standing ovation in Singapore, but the audience got up on their feet tonight and stayed there, clapping and swaying through the encore and the finale. Sadly, the theatre was only half full. If you read this and live in Singapore and you like dance, get a ticket. If you live in London, they are coming to you soon. If you live in Australia, too bad - you've missed them. Have a look at this instead.
